How to make a product launch video for your startup
A product launch video announces what you made, who it's for and why it matters now, usually in under a minute. The ones that work follow one shape: a hook, the reveal, proof in motion, and a clear ending. Motion graphics built from your product's own screens do this well, and you can make them from one prompt.
What is a product launch video?
It's a short film for launch day: on your website, on LinkedIn and X, on Product Hunt, in the email to your waitlist. Its job is to make people curious enough to try the product.
How long should a launch video be?
15 to 60 seconds for social posts. Up to about 90 seconds for your website or Product Hunt. Shorter is almost always better: every second has to earn the next one.
The shape of a launch video that works
- The hook: the problem, or the moment your customer knows too well.
- The reveal: your product's name and its one line.
- The proof: the product in motion, two or three screens that show it working.
- The ending: the name again, the address, and what to do now.
What should a launch video say?
One promise, in plain words. Say what the product does for whom, the way a customer would say it. Skip the hype words; they read as noise. If you can't say it in one line, the video can't either.
Motion graphics or a founder on camera?
Motion graphics suit software: screens, type and light moving together, in your product's colours. A founder on camera builds trust. Many good launches use both: a short clip of the founder, edited and captioned, then the product in motion.
Van-Goh does both: motion graphics from your screenshots, and premium edits of your own footage.
How do I make a launch video without a motion designer?
With Van-Goh, from one prompt:
- 1Write one prompt. Say what the product is, who it's for and the one thing the launch film must show. One line is enough.
- 2Add your pictures. Add two to six photos or screenshots of the product, or your own clip. Clean, full-size images work best; the video is built around them, in their colours.
- 3Read the plan. Van-Goh shows you the style, the shape and the music before anything is made. Change it, or press Start (10 credits).
- 4Watch it and ask for changes. Say what to change in plain words, like "slower" or "show the price earlier". Each new version takes 3 credits. Then download the MP4.
Where should I post it?
Use 16:9 (wide) for your website, YouTube, X and LinkedIn, and 9:16 (tall) for Reels, TikTok and Stories. Put it on your website's first screen, pin it to your profiles, and send it to your waitlist on launch day.
